Daisuke Miyao will be heading up Transnational East Asian Cinemas this Spring, examining movies from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. All of this will be taught in the context of the immense political and cultural transformations in East Asia.

The goal of the course is to examine shifting representations of nationalism and cultural identity in East Asian Cinemas in the context of globalization and transnationalism. Screenings will include such popular and critically acclaimed films as Seagull Diner (Japan, 2006), Infernal Affairs (Hong Kong, 2002), Hero (China, 2002), Go (Japan, 2001), Take Care of My Cat (South Korea, 2001), Flowers of Shanghai (Taiwan, 1998) and Chung King Express (Hong Kong, 1995). Lectures and discussions in English with films subtitled in English (course supported by the Humanities Center at the University of Oregon).
