The UO English Department’s very own Sangita Gopal has a new book out!
“Conjugations: Marriage and Form in New Bollywood Cinema” is an exploration of the diverse dimensions of conjugality and Bollywood through multiple lines of inquiry, including attention to song and dance sequences, the emergence of the new genre of horror, and the revitalization of Bengali cinema. This dazzling and wide-reaching book will be of interest to scholars not only in cinema studies, but more generally, those interested in postcoloniality, feminism and gender, and the nation-state in South Asia.
I had the pleasure of taking a Film, Media & History class with Professor Gopal last year. She really knew her stuff and opened my eyes to the world of Bollywood film, which I had previously dismissed as a kind of empty style of cinema fueled purely by visuals and ridiculous story lines. It was also interesting learning about the rich history of Egyptian cinema as well, which I hadn’t even been aware of until taking her class.
The book is now available at the University of Chicago Press website.
