“RE:GENERATION” is a new movie that I am particularly excited about. I’m going to try to do everything in my power to make it up to Portland for PIFF to catch it. And guess whaaat? It’s got a healthy dose of Scrillex for you Dubstep heads. But if that’s not your cup of tea, then I’m sure people will love the appearances by DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights, The Doors, NaS, Mos Def and a variety of other artists spanning every genre you can imagine.

The film is a documentary film that follows the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT. It examines the history of different musical genres through the eyes of five of the most influential electronic producers/DJ’s in music today, along with the original music created for the project.  Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights and Skrillex each take a specific musical style and explore it by writing and recording a brand new track with a grouping of influential collaborators in that genre.

The entire experience comes to life in “RE:GENERATION’S” feature documentary directed by award-winning documentarian Amir Bar-Lev (“My Kid Could Paint That,” “The Tillman Story”). Along the way, these five DJ/producers journey to hotbeds for each genre including New Orleans for jazz, Nashville for country, Los Angeles for rock, Boston for classical and Detroit for R&B.  For example, you’ll find Denver-based Pretty Lights traveling to Nashville, visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and going into the studio with the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley and LeAnn Rimes for “Wayfaring Stranger.” Skrillex teams up with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger along the Venice Boardwalk in Los Angeles to later collaborate on “Breakn’ A Sweat” with John Densmore for what will amount to the first original recording featuring members of The Doors since An American Prayer was released in 1978.

Martha Reeves of the Vandellas and The Funk Brothers get a visit in Detroit from breakbeat pioneers The Crystal Method for an R&B horn- sassy and down-bass “I’m Staying”; Mark Ronson heads to Piety Street Studios and Preservation Hall in New Orleans to meet up with Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Trombone Shorty, members of the Dap Kings and Zigaboo Modeliste to record a raw, jazzy number titled “A La Modeliste”; and DJ Premier heads down the Paul Revere trail from Boston where he conducts the Berklee Symphony Orchestra in his New York City studio to capture lyrics by NAS for “Regeneration.”

Presented by Hyundai Veloster, the “RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT” crosses the most unexpected generations and genres in today’s most innovative form of music creativity.  Hyundai’s role as the project’s benefactor not only supports the artists, but creates an ambitious platform that challenges artists to fashion something they might not otherwise have imagined for these captured ‘fish out of water’ moments.  Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method puts it best: “There is no sound we can’t make.  There’s not a beat we can’t create.  There’s not an artist we can’t record…Now what?”  “You just put me in a whole different way on how to listen,” adds DJ Premier.
