Elizabeth Peterson, Assistant Professor & Humanities/Literature Librarian at the University of Oregon discusses the importance of 16mm films.

“Film on Film” is a special event put on by the University of Oregon Cinema Studies Program. The first “Film on Film” screening will occur Friday, February 24th at 7PM in PLC 180 on the U of O Campus. It will consist of a double feature that includes Herk Harvey’s “Dance Little Children”, a 25 minute sex-ed film that follows a fictitious syphilis outbreak in New Jersey. This will be followed by Billy Wilder’s 1944 classic, “Double Indemnity”, a film noir bursting at the seams with tension, intrigue and romance. This event will be free to the public. Popcorn will be served! Both films will be screened from 16mm film reels!

The next event making up the “Film on Film” series for the month of February will take place on Thursday, March 8th, 4PM at The Bijou! “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) will be shown in 35mm glory! Another classic film noir that follows a hack screenwriter who develops a screenplay for a former silent film star who has faded into Hollywood obscurity. This event is free to U of O students who present their I.D. and regular admission price for the public.

Both events promise to be a lot of fun. There really is no substitute for the medium of actual film. From the rattle of the projector to the quality of the image, this is truly a fantastic opportunity to support a dying art form in this digital age.
